Houses which Planets dislike - Sarvārtha Cintāmaṇi

Below you can find translation of verses from Sarvārtha Cintāmaṇi (Chapter 1, ślokas 119-132) explaining Pācakādi Concept.

I thank Pandit Visti Larsen for pointing out these ślokas to me, please also find at the end of this post a short commentary from Visti on application of Pācakādi, which I am publishing with his permission.

There are different applications of this complex concept, among other things it tells us which houses from themselves Grahas dislike, consider as enemy. Find these houses in the table below marked by red color, for example, Mars considers 12th house from itself as inimical, the Sun consider the 6th house from it as inimical, etc.

Translation: I will tell (vakṣye) about places(sthānāni) for planets (grahāṇāṃ) seriatim (kramaśo):
They are placed in the 6th, the 7th, the 9th, the 11th houses (ṣaṭ-sapta-dharma-aya-gatāḥ) – in that order (krameṇa) – from the Sun (bhānoḥ);
They are joined with the 7th, the 9th, the 11th and with the 3rd houses (mada-bhāgya-lābha-yuktās-tṛtīyena) from the Moon (śaśāṃkād);
And from Mars (‘son of Earth’) (dharā-sutāc-ca) – they are located in the 2nd, the 6th, the 11th and the 12th (dhana-ari-lābha-aṃtya-gatā);
From Mercury (‘son of the Moon’) (abja-sūnor) – the 2nd, the 4th, the 5th and the 3rd (dvitīya-baṃdhu-ātmaja-sodarāś-ca);
From Jupiter (guros-tu) – the 6th, the 5th, the 7th and the 12th (ṣaṣṭha-ātmaja-kāma-riṣphā);
From Venus (śukrād) – theyare joined with the2nd, the 6th, the 12th and the 4th (dhana-ari-vyaya-baṃdhu-yuktāḥ);
They are located in the 3rd, the 11th, the 6th and the 7th (tṛtīya-lābha-ari-kalatra-gās-tu) – from Saturn (‘son of Lord of the Day’) (dineśa-sūnoḥ).
Knowing that say so (pravadaṃti taj-jñāḥ).

sakārako vedhakasaṃjñakaśca śanestu tatkārakakhecaro’riḥ ||126||

Translation: The enemy (śatrur) for the Sun (dineśasya tu) would be Pācaka (pācakaḥ syān) the rest are friends (mitrāṇi śeṣāḥ).
For the Moon (śaśinas-tu) the enemy (vairī) is in the 12th [from it] (vyaye).
And for Mars (bhaumasya ca) Vedhaka is enemy (vedhakaḥ śatrur), and also for Mercury (ca budhasya) it is causing death (aṃtakaro).
For Jupiter (guros-tu) Pācaka planet (pāka-graho) and Vedhaka (vedhaka-saṃjñakaś-ca) will be enemy (śatrur-bhaved).
And for Venus the enemy (āsphujitaś-ca vairī) is Vedhaka (vedhaka-saṃjñakaś) and Kāraka (sa-kārako).
And for Saturn (ca śanes-tu), that Kāraka planet (tat-kāraka-khecaro) is enemy (’riḥ).

Table: ślokas 125-126
Note: In Books (Sanskrit-Hindi and Sanskrit-English; English translation just repeats translation of Hindi), translation does not consist of second enemy for Jupiter and Venus, in books’ variants for Jupiter – only Pācaka is enemy, for Venus – only Vedhaka. Statement “the rest are friends” is given only in the first line for the Sun, possibly it should be extended to all the planets.

Translation: There will be sometimes fortune (bhāgyaṃ kvacit) and sometimes miserable results (kṣīṇa-phalaṃ kvacic-ca) – suffering from disease of wife, wealth, relatives, kids (dāra-artha-baṃdhu-ātmaja-roga-pīḍām), suffering from thieves and fire (cora-agni-pīḍāṃ), having quarrel with people (kalahī janais-tu), if Kāraka planet equal to friend (sa-kārako mitra-samo yadi syāt); if Kāraka planet equal to enemy (sa-kārako vairi-samo) then they do not say about reverse results (na tat-tu vadaṃti vyatyāsa-phalaṃ) – even more (viśeṣāt) – suffering excessively due to thieves, fire, relatives, king and community (cora-agni-baṃdhu-kṣitipāla-saṃghair-atīva duḥkhaṃ) and falling from own position (sva-pada-cyutiṃ ca).

विदेशयानं धननाशनं च वेधग्रहस्तत्फलमन्यथान्यः ॥१३२॥
videśayānaṃ dhananāśanaṃ ca vedhagrahastatphalamanyathānyaḥ ||132||

Translation: Foreign travel and destruction of wealth (videśa-yānaṃ dhana-nāśanaṃ ca) is result of Vedhaka planet (vedha-grahas-tat-phalam) in first case (i.e. friend) and in second case (i.e. enemy) (anyathā-anyaḥ).
I will repeat the table below, in which the enemies are indicated by red color.
Pt. Visti Larsen’s comment:

This is a very useful concept for Viṃśottari Daśā to define time which grahas help other grahas. Regardless of daśā it also shows support, for example, if Jupiter is the Lord of Ārūḍha Lagna, then it is informed (bodhaka) by Mars, challenged (pācaka) by Saturn, assisted (kāraka) by Moon, critiqued (vedhaka) by Sun. Then we should examine these graha’s places in the chart to know how they will do this to the person.

Further, the 5th house from Jupiter will give the person information (bodhaka) to do his work the best. Or, for example if planet is in the 7th (kāraka) from that Jupiter, then daśā or antardaśā of this planet can bring some success.

Since Ārūḍha Lagna Lord is important in all vargas, so also, we can read these positions in all Varga’s from Jupiter.

Vedhaka is the one who knows your weaknesses. If they are friendly, then they will support you and tell you why you cannot succeed. May encourage foreign travel. If inimical they steal from you.

One more thing about this idea of ‘enemy’. Mars and Moon dislike 12th house, but I cannot agree that they hurt that house. More like 'do not support'. Practically this means 'if Mars is responsible for protecting Upapada/marriage, then daśā of planets in 12th house from Mars will hurt marriage'. Similarly, if Mars is to protect longevity, then daśā of graha in 12th house from Mars can hurt health and longevity.

Illustration: Christophere Reeve – American actor on stage, film and TV. He was most noted for his lead role in "Superman," 1977. Reeve played in three sequels and ten other films. On May 27, 1995, while riding at the Commonwealth Dressage event, which is a three-day competition in precision horsemanship, he was thrown forward and hit his head, neck and spine. The trauma left him paralyzed and unable to breathe on his own.

His strongest Ārūḍha Lagna is Virgo, with exalted Ārūḍha Lagna Lord Mercury in it, and we can see how mahāpuruṣa Venus (Kāraka for Mercury) and 2nd house Libra (Pācaka from Mercury) supports him in his career during Venus mahādaśā.

Further – Pt. Visti Larsen’s comment:
For Āyus (Life and health) we normally see the Moon (Somanātha), but here Moon is conjoined by Mars, so Mars decides instead.
Mars considers the 12th house from himself as enemy [and so does the Moon], hence dṛṣṭi on Libra can cause setbacks, and we can see Jupiter’s dṛṣṭi on Libra.
The accident happened in on May 27, 1995 in Sun mahādaśā Jupiter antardaśā.
Sun is māraka in triṣaḍaya (3rd, 6th, 11th) hence very negative [also in Pitri dosa and getting aspect from Rāhu].
Jupiter is the Kāraka for the Sun according to the table above hence Jupiter is supporting Sun in his evil deeds as māraka during Jupiter antardaśā, and 6L Jupiter, as it was already mentioned, shares dṛṣṭi on Libra.
