सृष्टिक्रमकथनाध्यायः ॥ १ ॥
sṛṣṭikramakathanādhyāyaḥ || 1 ||
Translation: A chapter talking about the order of Creation (sṛṣṭi-krama-kathana-adhyāyaḥ)

इति श्रीबृहत्पाराशरहोरापूर्वखंडसारांशे शास्त्रावतारणं नाम प्रथमोध्यायः ॥१॥

Translation: This is the first chapter named “the teaching about descending” (śāstra-avatāraṇaṃ nāma prathamo’dhyāyaḥ) in the essential part of the first volume of Holy BPHS (iti śrī-bṛhat-pārāśara-horā-pūrva-khaṃḍa-sārāṃśe).

Ganesha Datta Pathaka (22 ślokas):
इति पाराशरहोरायां सुबोधिन्यां प्रथमोऽध्यायः ॥१॥

Translation: This is the first chapter (iti prathamo'dhyāyaḥ) in Parashara Hora with enlightening commentary (pārāśarahorāyāṃ subodhinyāṃ).

अथ मंगलाचरणं
प्रणम्यगिरिजापतिं हरिविरंचिदेवैस्स्तुतं विलोक्य च महत्तरां सुकृतिबृद्धपाराशरीम् ततश्च कथयाम्यहं विविधभेदसारां शकं ग्रहादिफलसंग्रहं विबुध श्रीधराख्यो द्विजः ॥१॥
atha maṃgalācaraṇaṃ
praṇamya girijāpatiṃ hariviraṃci devais stutaṃ vilokya ca mahattarāṃ sukṛtibṛddhapārāśarīm tataśca kathayāmyahaṃ vividhabhedasārāṃ śakaṃ grahādiphalasaṃgrahaṃ vibudha śrīdharākhyo dvijaḥ ||1||
Translation: Prayer for the success (atha maṃgalācaraṇaṃ).
Having bowed to Lords Śiva (husband of Goddess Parvati), praised by Visnu and Brahma and other Gods (girijā-patiṃ hari-viraṃci-devais-stutaṃ) and looking at (vilokya ca) greatest (mahat-tarāṃ) righteous ancient work of Parashara (sukṛti-bṛddha-pārāśarīm), I will speak about (tataś-ca kathayāmy-ahaṃ) main points of various parts (vividha-bheda-sārāṃ) of auspiciously collected results of grahas etc. (śakaṃ grahādi-phala-saṃgrahaṃ) I am learned brahman with name Shridhara (vibudha śrīdharā-khyo dvijaḥ).

अथैकदा मुनिश्रेष्ठं त्रि कालज्ञं पराशरम् । पप्रच्छोपेत्य मैत्रेयः प्रणिपत्य कृताञ्जलिः ॥ १ ॥
athaikadā muniśreṣṭhaṃ trikālajñaṃ parāśaram |
papracchopetya maitreyaḥ praṇipatya kṛtāñjaliḥ || 1 ||
Translation: Once upon a time (athā-ekadā) Maitreya (maitreyaḥ), having approached (upetya) the best of the sages (muni-śreṣṭhaṃ), who knows the three times (tri-kāla-jñaṃ), Parashara (parāśaram), and having bowed to him (praṇipatya) with folded hands (kṛtāñjaliḥ), questioned thus (papraccha).

paramānandakandāya gurave 'jñānadhvaṃsine ||2||
Translation: Maitreya said (maitreya uvāca): I bow to that Holy One, who has knowledge as their nature always (namas-tasmai bhagavate bodha-rūpāya sarvadā), to the root of Supreme Bliss (parama-ānanda-kandāya), to the Teacher, who removes ignorance (gurave 'jñāna-dhvaṃsine).

इति स्तुत्या सुसंहृष्टो मुनिस्तत्त्वविदाम्बरः । अथादिदेश सच्छास्त्रं सारं यज्ज्योतिषां शुभम् ।।३।।
iti stutyā susaṃhṛṣṭo munistattvavidāmvaraḥ |
athādideśa sacchāstraṃ sāraṃ yajjyotiṣāṃ śubham ||3||
Translation: Being pleased with this praise (iti stutyā susaṃhṛṣṭo), the best sage among those who know Tattvas (munis-tattva-vidām-varaḥ) started teaching (atha-adideśa) this scripture (sac-chāstraṃ), which is auspicious essence of the heavenly bodies, planets and stars (sāraṃ yaj-jyotiṣāṃ śubham).

भगवन्परमं पुण्यं गुह्यं वेदाङ्गमुत्तमम् । त्रिस्कन्धं ज्यौतिषं होरा गणितं संहितेति च ॥ २ ॥
bhagavanparamaṃ puṇyaṃ guhyaṃ vedāṅgamuttamam |
triskandhaṃ jyautiṣaṃ horā gaṇitaṃ saṃhiteti ca || 2 ||
Translation: Divine, highest, pure, secret (bhagavan paramaṃ puṇyaṃ guhyaṃ), uppermost among Vedangas (vedāṅgam-uttamam) – Jyotish has three divisions (tri-skandhaṃ jyautiṣaṃ), which are Hora, Ganita and Samhita (horā gaṇitaṃ saṃhitā-iti).

eteṣvapi triṣu śreṣṭhā horeti śrūyate mune |
tvattastāṃ śrotumicchāmi kṛpayā vada me prabho || 3 ||
Translation: Among these three [divisions] (eteṣu-api triṣu), Horā is the best to be learnt, oh sage (śreṣṭhā horā-iti śrūyate mune). I desire to learn it from you (tvat-tastāṃ śrotum-icchāmi), kindly tell me, oh Master (kṛpayā vada me prabho).

कथं सृष्टिरियं जाता जगतश्च लयः कथम् । खस्थानां भूस्थितानां च सम्बन्धं वद विस्तरात् ॥ ४ ॥
kathaṃ sṛṣṭiriyaṃ jātā jagataśca layaḥ katham |
khasthānāṃ bhūsthitānāṃ ca sambandhaṃ vada vistarāt || 4 ||
Translation: How did this creation of the Universe happen? (kathaṃ sṛṣṭiriyaṃ jātā) And how will dissolution of worlds [happen]? (jagataś-ca layaḥ katham) Kindly tell me in detail (vada vistarāt) the relationship (sambandhaṃ) between those existing in the skies and those living on the earth (khasthānāṃ bhūsthitānāṃ ca).

साधु पृष्टं त्वया विप्र लोकानुग्रहकारिना । अथाहं परमं ब्रह्म तच्छक्तिं भारतीं पुनः ॥ ५ ॥
sādhu pṛṣṭaṃ tvayā vipra lokānugrahakārinā |
athāhaṃ paramaṃ brahma tacchaktiṃ bhāratīṃ punaḥ || 5 ||
Translation: O Brahmin (vipra), the query is rightly made by you for the welfare of the world (sādhu pṛṣṭaṃ tvayā loka-anugraha-kārinā). Therefore I [having offered my obeisance] to Lord Brahma and also his power Śrī Sarasvatī (speech) (athāhaṃ paramaṃ brahma tacchaktiṃ bhāratīṃ punaḥ)

पराशर उवाच
parāśara uvāca
शुक्लाम्बरधरं विष्णुं शुक्लाम्बरधरां गिराम् । प्रणम्य पाञ्चजन्यं च वीणां याभ्यां धृतं द्वयम् ॥४॥
śuklāmbaradharaṃ viṣṇuṃ śuklāmbaradharāṃ girām |
praṇamya pāñcajanyaṃ ca vīṇāṃ yābhyāṃ dhṛtaṃ dvayam ||4||
Translation: Parāśara said (parāśara uvāca):
I make obeisance to arrayed in white garments Viṣṇu and Sarasvatī (speech) (śukla-ambara-dharaṃ viṣṇuṃ śukla-ambara-dharāṃ girām praṇamya), who are holding conch taken from the demon Pañcajana and Vīṇā (lute) (pāñcajanyaṃ ca vīṇāṃ yābhyāṃ dhṛtaṃ dvayam).

सूर्यं नत्वा ग्रहपतिं जगदुत्पत्तिकारणम् । वक्ष्यामि वेदनयनं यथा ब्रह्ममुखाच्छ्रुतम् ॥ ६ ॥
sūrya natvā grahapatiṃ jagadutpattikāraṇam |
vakṣyāmi vedanayanaṃ yathā brahmamukhācchrutam || 6 ||
Translation: Having offered my obeisance the Sun god, the Lord of the planets and the cause of creation of the world (sūrya natvā grahapatiṃ jagad-utpatti-kāraṇam), I will tell you about the eye of Veda (vakṣyāmi veda-nayanaṃ) as it was heard from Brahma’s mouth (yathā brahma-mukhāc-chrutam).

शान्ताय गुरुभक्ताय सर्वदा सत्यवादिने । आस्तिकाय प्रदतव्यं ततः श्रेयो ह्यवाप्स्यति ॥ ७ ॥
śāntāya gurubhaktāya sarvadā satyavādine |
āstikāya pradatavyaṃ tataḥ śreyo hyavāpsyati || 7 ||
Translation: [This knowledge] is to be given (pradatavyaṃ) to peaceful devotee of Gurus (śāntāya guru-bhaktāya), who is always truthful (sarvadā satya-vādine) and has faith (āstikāya). Only then welfare will be obtained (tataḥ śreyo hi-avāpsyati).

न देयं परशिष्याय नास्तिकाय शठय वा । दत्ते प्रतिदिनं दुःखं जायते नात्र संशयः ॥ ८ ॥
na deyaṃ paraśiṣyāya nāstikāya śaṭhaya vā |
datte pratidinaṃ duḥkhaṃ jāyate nātra saṃśayaḥ || 8 ||
Translation: [This knowledge] should not be given (na deyaṃ) to another's disciple, to an atheist, or to deceitful person (paraśiṣyāya na-astikāya śaṭhaya vā). Doing so causes daily suffering (datte pratidinaṃ duḥkhaṃ jāyate), there is no doubt (na-atra saṃśayaḥ).

एकोऽव्यक्तात्मको विष्णुरनादिः प्रभुरीश्वरः । शुद्धसत्त्वो जगत्स्वामी निर्गुणस्त्रिगुणान्वितः ॥ ९ ॥
eko’vyaktātmako viṣṇuranādiḥ prabhurīśvaraḥ |
śuddhasattvo jagatsvāmī nirguṇastriguṇānvitaḥ || 9 ||
Translation: Viṣṇu is single unmanifested soul (eko ’vyakta-ātmako viṣṇur), who is eternal (having no beginning), powerful God (an-ādiḥ prabhur-īśvaraḥ) with pure sattva-guna (śuddha-sattvo), Lord of the Universe (jagat-svāmī). He is Nirguna (devoid of material qualities, transcendental) (nirguṇas), and He is endowed with all the three gunas (tri-guṇa-anvitaḥ).

संसारकारकः श्रीमान्निमित्तात्मा प्रतापवान् । एकांशेन जगत्सर्वं सृजत्यवति लीलया ॥ १० ॥
saṃsārakārakaḥ śrīmānnimittātmā pratāpavān |
ekāṃśena jagatsarvaṃ sṛjatyavati līlayā || 10 ||
Translation: The Creator of material world (saṃsāra-kārakaḥ), illustrious, reasonable and majestic (śrīmān nimitta-ātmā pratāpavān), He creates and governs the whole Universe (jagat-sarvaṃ sṛjati-avati) playfully (līlayā) by one part of Himself (eka-aṃśena).

त्रिपादं तस्य देवस्य ह्यमृतं तत्त्वदर्शिनः । विदन्ति तत्प्रमाणं च सप्रधानं तथैकपात् ॥ ११ ॥
tripādaṃ tasya devasya hyamṛtaṃ tattvadarśinaḥ |
vidanti tatpramāṇaṃ ca sapradhānaṃ tathaikapāt || 11 ||
Translation: Three quarters of this God, which are filled with nectar (tri-pādaṃ tasya devasya hi-amṛtaṃ), are knowable to only those who see Truth (tattva-darśinaḥ vidanti). And one quarter of Him (tat-pramāṇaṃ ca tathā-ekapāt) is with ‘the Originator’ (sa-pradhānaṃ).

tattvadarśin – person who is able to perceive truth, who knows the essence of things without Māyā
pradhāna – chief, ‘the Originator’, primary germ, original source of the visible or material universe

व्यक्ताव्यक्तात्मको विष्णुर्वासुदेवस्तु गीयते । यदव्यक्तात्मको विष्णुः शक्तिद्वयसमन्वितः ॥ १२ ॥
vyaktāvyaktātmako viṣṇurvāsudevastu gīyate |
yadavyaktātmako viṣṇuḥ śaktidvayasamanvitaḥ || 12 ||
Translation: Viṣṇu, who has both manifested and unmanifested nature (vyakta-avyakta-ātmako viṣṇur), is praised as Vāsudeva (vāsudevas-tu gīyate). The unmanifest part of that Viṣṇu joints two powers (Śakti) (yad-avyakta-ātmako viṣṇuḥ śakti-dvayasam-anvitaḥ).

व्यक्तात्मकस्त्रिभिर्युक्तः कथ्यतेऽनन्तशक्तिमान् । सत्त्वप्रधाना श्रीशक्तिर्भूशक्तिश्च रजोगुणा ॥ १३ ॥
vyaktātmakas triśaktībhiḥ saṃyuto ’nantaśaktimān |
sattvapradhānā śrīśaktirbhūśaktiśca rajo-guṇā || 13 ||
Translation: Manifested part joints with three energies (Śakti) (vyakta-ātmakas tri-śaktībhiḥ saṃyuto) and is omnipotent / all-powerful (ananta-śaktimān). Śrī Śakti has nature of Sattva (śaktisattva-pradhānā śrī-śaktir), and Bhū Śakti has nature of Rajas (bhū-śaktiś-ca rajo-guṇā).

Note: Sharma, Santhanam: triśaktībhiḥ saṃyuto -> tribhiryuktaḥ kathyate (with three jointed, they say).

शक्तिस्तृतीया या प्रोक्ता नीलाख्या ध्वान्तरूपिणी । वासुदेवश्चतुर्थोऽभूच्छ्रीशक्त्या प्रेरितो यदा ॥ १४ ॥
śaktistṛtīyā yā proktā nīlākhyā dhvāntarūpiṇī |
vāsudevaścaturtho ’bhūcchrīśaktyā prerito yadā || 14 ||
Translation: The third Śakti, which is called by the name Nīlā (‘dark’, ‘dark-blue’) (śaktis-tṛtīyā yā proktā nīlā-khyā), has form of darkness (dhvānta-rūpiṇī). Vāsudeva has become the fourth (vāsudevaś-caturtho ’bhūt), when He was impelled [to manifest] by Śrī Śakti (śrī-śaktyā prerito yadā).

संकर्षणश्च प्रद्युम्नोऽनिरुद्ध इति मूर्तिधृक् । तमःशक्त्याऽन्वितो विष्णुर्देवः संकर्षणाभिधः ॥ १५ ॥
saṃkarṣaṇaśca pradyumno’niruddha iti mūrtidhṛk |
tamaḥśaktyā’nvito viṣṇurdevaḥ saṃkarṣaṇābhidhaḥ || 15 ||
Translation: Sankarṣaṇa, Pradyumna and Aniruddha (saṃkarṣaṇaś-ca pradyumno ’niruddha) are forms that He is bearing (iti mūrti-dhṛk). When He is conjoined with Tamas-śakti (tamaḥ-śaktyā ’nvito), then God Viṣṇu’s name is Sankarṣaṇa (viṣṇur-devaḥ saṃkarṣaṇa-ābhidhaḥ).

प्रद्युम्नो रजसा शक्त्याऽनिरुद्धः सत्त्वया युतः । महान्संकर्षणाज्जातः प्रद्युम्नाद्यदहंकृतिः ॥ १६ ॥
pradyumno rajasā śaktyā ’niruddhaḥ sattvayā yutaḥ |
mahānsaṃkarṣaṇājjātaḥ pradyumnādyadahaṃkṛtiḥ || 16 ||
Translation: Pradyumna is the name, when He is conjoined with Rajas Śakti, Aniruddha – when with Sattva (pradyumno rajasā śaktyā ’niruddhaḥ sattvayā yutaḥ). Mahā Tattva is originated from Sankarṣaṇa (mahān-saṃkarṣaṇāj-jātaḥ), Ego (Ahaṃkāra) – from Pradyumna (pradyumnād-yad-ahaṃkṛtiḥ).

अनिरुद्धात्स्वयं जातो ब्रह्माहंकारमूर्तिधृक् । सर्वेषु सर्वशक्तिश्च स्वशक्त्याऽधिकया युतः ॥ १७ ॥
aniruddhātsvayaṃ jāto brahmāhaṃkāramūrtidhṛk |
sarveṣu sarvaśaktiśca svaśaktyā’dhikayā yutaḥ || 17 ||
Translation: Brahma himself is originated from Aniruddha in the embodiment of ego (aniruddhāt-svayaṃ jāto brahma-ahaṃkāra-mūrti-dhṛk). Everyone (Sankarṣaṇa, Pradyumna and Aniruddha) have all three powers (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas-śakti) (sarveṣu sarva-śaktiś), yet in each of them their own power is surpassing (sva-śaktyā ’dhikayā yutaḥ).

अहंकारस्त्रिधा भूत्वा सर्वमेतदविस्तरात् । सात्त्विको राजसश्चैव तामसश्चेदहंकृतिः ॥ १८ ॥
ahaṃkārastridhā bhūtvā sarvametadavistarāt |
sāttviko rājasaścaiva tāmasaścedahaṃkṛtiḥ || 18 ||
Translation: Ego (Ahaṃkāra) has three aspects (ahaṃkāras-tridhā) from which all things came into being (bhūtvā sarvam-etad-avistarāt), this Ahaṃkāra is related to Sattva, Rajas or Tamas (sāttviko rājasaś-caiva tāmasaś-ced-ahaṃkṛtiḥ).

देवा वैकारिकाज्जातास्तैजसादिन्द्रियाणि च । तामसाच्चैवभूतानि खादीनि स्वस्वशक्तिभिः ॥ १९ ॥
devā vaikārikājjātāstaijasādindriyāṇi ca |
tāmasāccaivabhūtāni khādīni svasvaśaktibhiḥ || 19 ||
Translation: Devas [are originated] from Sattvic Ahaṃkāra (devā vaikārikād-jātās); Indriyas – from Tejasic Ahaṃkāra (taijasād-indriyāṇi ca), and Bhutas (five elements – ether, air, fire, water, earth) – from Tamasic (tāmasāc-caiva bhūtāni kha-ādīni). [All Ahaṃkāras are endowed] with their respective energies (Śaktis) (sva-sva-śaktibhiḥ).

श्रीशक्त्या सहितो विष्णुः सदा पाति जगत्त्रयम् । भूशक्त्या सृजते ब्रह्मा नीलशक्त्या शिवोऽत्ति हि ॥२०॥
śrīśaktyā sahito viṣṇuḥ sadā pāti jagattrayam |
bhūśaktyā sṛjate brahmā nīlaśaktyā śivo’tti hi || 20 ||
Translation: Viṣṇu, connected with Śrī Śakti (śrī-śaktyā sahito viṣṇuḥ), continuously preserves three worlds (sadā pāti jagat-trayam), [connected] with Bhū Śakti, He is Brahma and creates (bhū-śaktyā sṛjate brahmā), with Nila Śakti He is Śiva and dissolves [three worlds] (nīla-śaktyā śivo’tti hi).

सर्वेषु चैव जीवेषु परमात्मा विराजते । सर्वं हि तदिदं ब्रह्मन्स्थितं हि परमात्मनि ॥ २१ ॥
sarveṣu caiva jīveṣu paramātmā virājate |
sarvaṃ hi tadidaṃ brahmansthitaṃ hi paramātmani || 21 ||
Translation: And just as the Supreme Soul presents/governs/shine out in all living beings (sarveṣu ca-eva jīveṣu paramātmā virājate), the entire world is situated in the Supreme Soul (sarvaṃ hi tadidaṃ sthitaṃ hi paramātmani), Oh Brahmin (brahman).

सर्वेषु चैव जीवेषु स्थितं ह्यंशद्वयं क्वचित् । जीवांशो ह्यधिकस्तद्वत्परमात्मांशकः किल ॥ २२ ॥
sarveṣu caiva jīveṣu sthitaṃ hyaṃśadvayaṃ kvacit |
jīvāṃśo hyadhikastadvatparamātmāṃśakaḥ kila || 22 ||
Translation: In all living beings (sarveṣu caiva jīveṣu), there are two parts [- Jīvāṁśa (Individual Soul) and Paramātmāṁśa (the Supreme Soul)] (sthitaṃ hy-aṃśa-dvayaṃ), some have more Jīvāṁśa (kvacit jīvāṃśo hy-adhikas), and some have more Paramātmāṁśa (tadvat-paramātma-aṃśakaḥ), as said (kila).

सूर्यादयो ग्रहाः सर्वे ब्रह्मकामद्विषादयः । एते चान्ये च बहवः परमात्मांशकाधिकाः ॥ २३ ॥
sūryādayo grahāḥ sarve brahmakāmadviṣādayaḥ |
ete cānye ca bahavaḥ paramātmāṃśakādhikāḥ || 23 ||
Translation: All Planets – Sun etc. (sūrya-ādayo grahāḥ sarve), Brahma, Śiva (enemy of Kāma God) and other mighty gods (brahma-kāma-dviṣa-ādayaḥ ete ca-anye ca bahavaḥ) have greater portion of Paramātma (paramātma-aṃśaka-adhikāḥ).

शक्तयश्च तथैतेषमधिकांशाः श्रियादयः । स्वस्वशक्तिषु चान्यासु ज्ञेया जीवांशकाधिकाः ॥ २४ ॥
śaktayaśca tathaiteṣamadhikāṃśāḥ śriyādayaḥ |
svasvaśaktiṣu cānyāsu jñeyā jīvāṃśakādhikāḥ || 24 ||
Translation: Their Śaktis – Śrī etc. – also have greater portion of Paramātma (śaktayaś-ca tatha-eteṣam-adhikāṃśāḥ śrī-ādayaḥ). Other deities and their own powers (śakti) have a greater portion of Jīvātma (sva-sva-śaktiṣu ca-anyāsu jñeyā jīvāṃśaka-adhikāḥ).
