अथ राशिस्वरूपाध्यायः ॥४॥

Translation: Now (atha), a chapter about characters of the signs (rāśi-svarūpa-ādhyāyaḥ).

Tara Chandra (30 ślokas) / Girdhari Lal (30 ślokas):
इति श्री बृहत्पाराशरहोरासारांशे पूर्वखण्डे ग्रहगुणस्वरूपादिकथनो नाम द्वितीयोऽध्यायः ॥३॥
iti śrī bṛhatpārāśarahorāsārāṃśe pūrvakhaṇḍe grahaguṇasvarūpādikathano nāma dvitīyo'dhyāyaḥ ||3||
Translation: It is in the 1st book of BPHS (iti śrī bṛhatpārāśarahorāsārāṃśe pūrvakhaṇḍe), the 2nd chapter entitled (nāma dvitīyo'dhyāyaḥ) ‘Description of the planet’s qualities, forms etc.’ (graha-guṇa-svarūpa-ādi-kathano).

अथ राशिप्रभेदाध्यायः ॥ २ ॥

Translation: Now (atha), the chapter about rāśi divisions (rāśi-prabheda-ādhyāyaḥ).

अहोरात्रस्य पूर्वान्त्यलोपाद्‌ होराऽवशिष्यते । तस्य विज्ञानमात्रेण जातकर्मफलं वदेत्‌ ॥१॥
ahorātrasya pūrvāntyalopād‌ horā'vaśiṣyate |
tasya vijñānamātreṇa jātakarmaphalaṃ vadet‌ ||1||
Translation: By omitting the first and the last syllable of word ‘ahorātri’ (‘day and night’) (ahorātrasya pūrva-antya-lopād‌) the ‘Horā’ remains (horā ’vaśiṣyate). The fruits of native’s karma (good and bad effects for the native) should be spoken (jāta-karma-phalaṃ vadet) by knowing Horā (tasya vijñāna-mātreṇa).

Tara Chandra (śl.2) / Girdhari Lal / Ganesh Datta Pathaka (śl.2):
अहोरात्र्याद्यन्तलोपाद्धोरेतिंप्रोच्यते बुधैः। तस्य हि ज्ञानमात्रेणजातकर्मफलं वदेत्॥ २ ॥

Translation: Omitting the first and the last syllable of word ‘ahorātri’ (‘day and night’) (aho-rātri-ādi-anta-lopād) gives the ‘Horā’ (horā), it is said by wise (iti procyate budhaiḥ). yadavyaktātmako viṣṇuḥ kālarupo janārdanaḥ |
tasyāṅgāni nibodha tvaṃ kramānmeṣādirāśayaḥ ||2||
Translation: [O Brahmin,] know, that signs beginning from Aries in order (nibodha tvaṃ kramād-meṣādi-rāśayaḥ) are limbs (tasya-aṅgāni) of Janārdana, the Time Personified, Visnu, Universal Soul (yad-avyakta-ātmako viṣṇuḥ kāla-rupo janārdanaḥ).

मेषो वृषश्च मिथुनः कर्कसिंहकुमारिकाः । तुलाऽलिश्च धनुर्नक्रे कुम्भो मीनस्ततः परम्‌ ॥३॥
meṣo vṛṣaśca mithunaḥ karkasiṃhakumārikāḥ |
tulā’liśca dhanurnakre kumbho mīnastataḥ param‌ ||3||
Translation: Aries and Taurus (meṣo vṛṣaś-ca), Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Virgo (mithunaḥ karka-siṃha-kumārikāḥ), Libra and Scorpio (tulā ’liś-ca), Sagittarius and Capricorn (dhanur-nakre), Aquarius and Pisces (kumbho mīnas) are highest [names] in that sequence (tataḥ param)‌.

शीर्षानने तथा बाहू हृत्क्रोडकटिवस्तयः । गुह्योरुयुगले जानुयुग्मे वै जङ्‌घके तथा ॥४॥
चरनौ द्वौ तथा मेषात्‌ ज्ञेयाः शीर्षादयः क्रमात्‌ ।
śīrṣānane tathā bāhū hṛtkroḍakaṭivastayaḥ |
guhyoruyugale jānuyugme vai jaṅ‌ghake tathā ||4||
caraṇau dvau tathā meṣāt‌ jñeyāḥ śīrṣādayaḥ kramāt‌ |
Translation: [1] Head and [2] face (śīrṣa-ānane), and also [3] arms (tathā bāhū), [4] heart, [5] breast (chest, bosom), [6] hips, [7] urinary organs (hṛt-kroḍa-kaṭi-vastayaḥ), [8] private parts and anus, [9] two thighs (guhya-ūru-yugale), [10] two knees (jānu-yugme vai), [11] two shanks (jaṅ‌ghake tathā) and [12] two feet (caraṇau dvau tathā) are known body parts from Aries etc. in order (meṣāt‌ jñeyāḥ śīrṣādayaḥ kramāt‌).

चरस्थिरद्विस्वभावाः क्रूराक्रूरौ नरस्त्रियौ ॥५॥
पित्तानिलत्रिधात्वैक्यश्लेष्मिकाश्च क्रियादयः ।

pittānilatridhātvaikyaśleṣmikāśca kriyādayaḥ |
Translation: Movable, fixed and dual (cara-sthira-dvisvabhāvāḥ), malefic and benefic (krūra-akrūrau), male and female (nara-striyau), Pitta, Vata, Tri-dosha and Kapha (pitta-anila-tri-dhātu-aikya-śleṣmikāś-ca) are signs beginning from Aries (kriya-ādayaḥ).

पूर्ववासी नृपज्ञातिः शैलचारी रजोगुणी । पृष्ठोदयी पावकी च मेषराशिः कुजाधिपः ॥७॥
raktavarṇo bṛhad‌gātraścatuṣpādrātrivikramī ||6||
pūrvavāsī nṛpajñātiḥ śailacārī rajoguṇī |
pṛṣṭhodayī pāvakī ca meṣarāśiḥ kujādhipaḥ ||7||
Translation: Sign Meṣa (meṣa-rāśiḥ) has blood-red complexion (rakta-varṇo), huge body (bṛhad‌-gātraś), is quadruped and strong during night (catuṣpād-rātri-vikramī). It resides in the East (pūrva-vāsī), is related to Royalty (nṛpa-jñātiḥ), wanders in hills (śaila-cārī), has predominate Rajas guna (rajo-guṇī), rises with its back (pṛṣṭhodayī), is fiery (pāvakī) and lorded by Mars (ca kuja-dhipaḥ).

yāmyeṭ‌ grāmyo vaṇigbhūmirajaḥ pṛṣṭhodayovṛṣaḥ || 8||
Translation: Taurus (vṛṣaḥ) has white complexion (śvetaḥ), is lorded by Venus (śukrādhipo), is tall (dīrghaś), quadruped (catuṣpāc), strong during night (charvarī-balī), resides in the South (yāmyeṭ‌), living in village (grāmyo), merchant (vaṇig), pṛthvi rāśi (bhūmi), has predominate Rajas guna (rajaḥ), rises with its back (pṛṣṭhodayo).

समगात्रो हरिद्वर्णो मिथुनाख्योबुधाधिपः ।
śīrṣodayī nṛmithunaṃ sagadaṃ ca savīṇakam‌ |
pratyag‌vāyurdvipādrātribalī grāmavrajo'nilī || 9||
samagātro haridvarṇo mithunākhyo budhādhipaḥ |
Translation: Gemini (mithuna-ākhyo) rises with its head (śīrṣodayī), a pair of male wielding mace and female with lute (nṛ-mithunaṃ sa-gadaṃ ca sa-vīṇakam)‌, resides in the West (pratyag), is Vāyu-rāśi ‌(vāyur), biped (dvipād), strong during night (rātri-balī), roaming in villages (grāma-vrajo), windy temperament ('nilī), even (balanced) body (sama-gātro), greenish color (harid-varṇo) and lorded by Mercury (budha-adhipaḥ).

बहुपादचरः स्थौल्यतनुः सत्त्वगुणीजली । पृष्ठोदयी कर्कराशिर्मृगांकाऽधिपतिः स्मृतः ॥११॥
pāṭalo vanacārī ca brāhmaṇo niśivīryavān‌ || 10||
bahupādacaraḥ sthaulyatanuḥ sattvaguṇī jalī |
pṛṣṭhodayī karkarāśirmṛgāṃkā'dhipatiḥ smṛtaḥ ||11||
Translation: The sign Cancer (karka-rāśir) is pink (pāṭalo), roaming in the forest (vana-cārī), represents brahmaṇa (ca brāhmaṇo), strong in the night (niśi vīryavān),‌ has many feet (bahu-pāda-caraḥ), bulky body (sthaulya-tanuḥ), has predominate Sattva guna (sattva-guṇī), Jala rāśi (water nature) (jalī), rises with its back (pṛṣṭhodayī), lorded by the Moon (mṛgāṃkā 'dhipatiḥ) as declared (smṛtaḥ).

siṃhaḥ sūryādhipaḥ sattvī catuṣpāt‌ kṣatriyo vanī |

Translation: Leo (siṃhaḥ) is lorded by the Sun (sūrya-adhipaḥ), has Sattva guna (sattvī), quadruped (catuṣpāt), Kṣatriya (kṣatriyo), lives in forest (vanī), is rising with head (śīrṣodayī), has large body (bṛhad‌-gātraḥ), has yellowish white color (pāṇḍuḥ), resides in the East (pūrveḍ),‌ strong in the day (dyu-vīryavān).‌

सा सस्यदहना वैश्याचित्रवर्णा प्रभञ्जिनी। कुमारीतमसा युक्ताबालभावा बुधाधिपा॥१४॥
pārvatīyātha kanyākhyā rāśirdinabalānvitā |
śīrṣodayā ca madhyāṃgā dvipādyāmyacarā ca sā || 13||
sā sasyadahanā vaiśyā citravarṇā prabhañjinī |
kumārī tamasā yuktā bālabhāvā budhādhipā ||14||
Translation: Sign Virgo (kanyākhyā rāśir) is dwelling in the mountains (pārvatīyā-atha), strong in the day (dina-balānvitā) and rising with head (śīrṣodayā ca), has medium body (madhyāṃgā), biped (dvipād), and she resides in the South (yāmya-carā ca sā).
She is holding corn and fire (sā sasya-dahanā), vaishya (vaiśya), various colors (citra-varṇā), windy nature (prabhañjinī), virgin (kumārī), has tamas guna (tamasā yuktā), has nature of child (bāla-bhāvā) and lorded by Mercury (budha-adhipā).

Translation: Libra (tulaḥ) is rising with head (śīrṣodayī), strong in the day (dyu-vīrya-āḍhyas), is black color (kṛṣṇo), has rajas guna (rajoguṇī), resides in the West (paścimo), going on the earth (bhū-caro), destroying (ghātī), shudra (śūdro), medium body (madhya-tanur), biped (dvipāt‌), is lorded by Venus (śukrā'dhipo).

Translation: Libra (tulo) is rising with head (śīrṣodayī), strong in the day (dyuvīrya-āḍhyas tathā), shudra (śūdro), has rajas guna (rajoguṇī), is lorded by Venus (śukro'dhipo), resides in the West (paścimeśo), medium body (madhya-tanur), biped (dvipāt‌).

saumyastho dinavīryāḍhyaḥ piśaṃgo jalabhūvaḥ ||16||

Translation: Scorpio (vṛścikaś) has small limbs ('tha svalpāṃgo), many feet (bahupād), is brahman (‌brāhmaṇo), strong (balī), resides in the North (saumya-stho), strong in the day (dina-vīryāḍhyaḥ), reddish-brown color (piśaṃgo), aquatic (jala-bhūvaḥ), has hairy body (roma-svāḍhyo), very sharp forepart ('titīkṣṇa-agro) and is lorded by Mars (ca kuja-adhipaḥ).

पूर्वस्थो वसुधाचारी तेजस्वीब्रह्मणा कृतः।

Translation: Sagittarius (dhanur) rises with its back (pṛṣṭhodayī tu-atha), is lorded by Jupiter (gurusvāmī ca), has Sattvic nature (sāttvikaḥ), yellow color (piṃgalo), strong in the night (niśivīryāḍhyaḥ), has Agni nature (pāvakaḥ), is kshatriya (kṣatriyo), is biped in the first half of sign (dvipāt‌ ādau) and quadruped in the end (ante catuṣpādaḥ), has medium body (sama-gātro), bears a bow (dhanur-dharaḥ). It resides in the East (pūrva-stho), wanders on the Earth (vasudhā-cārī), Brahma made it splendorous (tejasvī brahmaṇā kṛtaḥ).

mandādhipastamī bhaumī yāmyeṭ‌ ca niśi vīryavān‌|| 19||
pṛṣṭhodayī bṛhad‌gātraḥ karburo vanabhūcaraḥ |
ādau catuṣpadonte tu vipado jalago mataḥ || 20||
Translation: [Capricorn] is lorded by Saturn (mandādhipas), has tamas guna (tamī), Prithvi rāśi (earth nature) (bhaumī), resides in the south (yāmyeṭ)‌ and is strong in the night (ca niśi vīryavān),‌ rises with its back (pṛṣṭhodayī), has big body (bṛhad‌-gātraḥ), is of variegated colour (karburo), wanders on land and in forests (vana-bhū-caraḥ). It is quadruped in the first half of sign (ādau catuṣpado) and in the end without legs (’nte tu vipado), considered as aquatic (jalago mataḥ).

Note: Lal, Chandra, Pathaka: catuṣpadonte -> catuṣpadaṃte, Pathaka: tu vipado -> ca dvipado (biped).

Translation: Aquarius (kumbhaḥ) represents a male holding a pot (kumbhī naro), has brown complexion (babhru-varṇo), medium sized body (madhya-tanur), is biped (dvipāt), strong in the day (dyu-vīryo), resides in deep water (jala-madhya-stho), is vāyu tattva (wind element), rises with its head (vāta-śīrṣodayī), has tamas guna (tamaḥ), shudra (śūdraḥ), lord of the western direction (paścima-deśasya), is lorded by Saturn, as known (svāmī daivākariḥ smṛtaḥ).

jalī sattvaguṇāḍhyaśca svastho jalacaro dvijaḥ|
apado madhyadehī ca saumyastho hyubhayodayī || 23||
surācāryādhipaśceti rāśīnāṃ gaditā guṇāḥ|
triṃśad‌bhāgātmakānāṃ ca sthūlasūkṣmaphalāya ca|| 24||
Translation: O Brahman (dvijaḥ), Pisces sign (mīna-rāśir) is represented by two fishes, the tail of each is connected to the head of the other (mīnau puccha-āsya-saṃlagnau) is strong in the day (divā-balī), watery sign (jalī), and has predominant of Sattva guna (sattva-guṇāḍhyaś-ca), is resolute (sva-stha), glides in water (jala-caro), is without legs (apado) and has medium body (madhya-dehī ca), resides in the North (saumya-stho), rises with both – its head and back (hi-ubhayodayī), and is lorded by Jupiter (“Teacher of Gods”) (sura-ācāryādhipaś-ca).
These are enumerated characteristics (iti gaditā guṇāḥ) of signs consisting of 30 degrees (rāśīnāṃ triṃśad-‌bhāga-ātmakānāṃ ca) to evaluate gross and fine effects (sthūla-sūkṣma-phalāya ca).

अथातः सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि शृणुष्वमुनिपुंगव। जन्मलग्नंच संशोध्यनिषेकं परिशोधयेत्‌॥२५॥
athātaḥ sampravakṣyāmi śṛṇuṣva munipuṃgava |
 janmalagnaṃ ca saṃśodhya niṣekaṃ pariśodhayet‌ || 25||
Translation: O, eminent sage, listen to me (śṛṇuṣva muni-puṃgava), now I will explain (athātaḥ sampravakṣyāmi) that after having known Lagna of birth (janma-lagnaṃ ca saṃśodhya), Niṣeka lagna should be determined (niṣekaṃ pariśodhayet‌).

तदहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि मैत्रेयत्वं विधारय।जन्मलग्नात्‌ परिज्ञानं निषेकंसर्वजन्तु यत्‌ ॥२६॥
tadahaṃ saṃpravakṣyāmi maitreya tvaṃ vidhāraya |
janmalagnāt‌ parijñānaṃ niṣekaṃ sarvajantu yat‌ ||26||
Translation: O Maitreya (maitreya), I will explain it (tad-ahaṃ saṃpravakṣyāmi), and you get knowledge how to determine (tvaṃ vidhāraya parijñānaṃ) a creature’s Niṣeka lagna (niṣekaṃ sarva-jantu yat‌) from Janma lagna (janma-lagnāt‌).

यस्मिन्‌ भावे स्थितोमन्दस्तस्य मान्देर्यदन्तरम्‌। लग्नभाग्यान्तरं योज्यंयच्च राश्यादिजायते ॥२७॥
मासादि तन्मितं ज्ञेयंजन्मतः प्रक्‌ निषेकजम्‌।यद्यदृश्यदलेङ्गेशस्तदेन्दोर्भुक्तभागयुक्‌ ॥२८॥
yasmin‌ bhāve sthito mandastasya mānderyadantaram‌ |
lagnabhāgyāntaraṃ yojyaṃ yacca rāśyādi jāyate ||27||
māsādi tanmitaṃ jñeyaṃ janmataḥ prak‌ niṣekajam‌ | yadyadṛśyadaleṅgeśastadendorbhuktabhāgayuk ‌||28||
Translation: In which house Saturn is located (yasmin bhāve sthito mandas), the distance from Mandi to it (tasya mānder-yad-antaram‌) and the distance between the 9th house [sphuṭa] and the lagna (lagna-bhāgya-antaraṃ) should be added (yojyaṃ).
And as many signs, degrees, etc. (yad-ca rāśy-ādi)is obtained (jāyate), the same number of months, days, etc. should be counted (māsādi tanmitaṃ jñeyaṃ) before the time of birth – to determine the time of conception (janmataḥ prak‌ niṣekajam‌).
If the lord of the lagna is in the invisible half (the first 6 signs from the Ascendant) (yadi-adṛśya-dale ’ṅgeśas), then the bhukta of the Moon (the number of degrees passed by the Moon in its sign) (tadā-indor-bhukta-bhāga-yuk) should be added.

तत्काले साधयेल्लग्नं शोधयेत्‌ पूर्ववत्तनुम्‌।तस्माच्छुभाशुभं वाच्यंगर्भस्थस्य विशेषतः॥२९॥
tatkāle sādhayellagnaṃ śodhayet‌ pūrvavattanum‌|
tasmācchubhāśubhaṃ vācyaṃ garbhasthasya viśeṣataḥ ||29||
Translation: For that time [of conception] mentioned before (tatkāle pūrvavat), lagna should be calculated (sādhayet lagnaṃ), first house should be rectified (śodhayet‌ tanum), from that, the auspicious and inauspicious results should be predicted (tasmād-śubha-aśubhaṃ vācyaṃ) for the one who is staying in the womb, i.e. the fetus, particularly (garbha-sthasya viśeṣataḥ).

शुभाशुभं वदेत्‌ पित्रोर्जीवनं मरणं तथा। एवं निषेकलग्नेन सम्यग्‌ ज्ञेयं स्वकल्पनात्‌॥३०॥
śubhāśubhaṃ vadet‌ pitrorjīvanaṃ maraṇaṃ tathā |
evaṃ niṣekalagnena samyag‌ jñeyaṃ svakalpanāt‌ ||30||
Translation: In the same way (tathā) the auspicious and inauspicious results should be predicted (śubha-aśubhaṃ vadet) for ‌parents (pitror) – life and death (jīvanaṃ maraṇaṃ) by means of Nisheka-lagna (evaṃ niṣeka-lagnena) is to be understood thoroughly by one's own analytical skill (samyag‌ jñeyaṃ sva-kalpanāt‌).
